Doctoral students
To monitor the progress of doctoral students' research projects, L'École Doctorale has set up the following three procedures in accordance with the decree of May 25, 2016 amended by the decree of August 26, 2022.
Depending on the start date of your thesis, two scenarios are possible:
- Start of thesis BEFORE September 2022: The 3 steps described below must take place separately, but they can also be deferred in time.
- Starting your thesis AFTER September 2022: The 3 steps described below must take place separately and successively
-
Step 1: Progress report
Procedure :
Progress reviews take place at the end of the first year. During these assessments, the doctoral student is given 20 minutes to present his or her work over the course of the year. Following the presentation, a discussion takes place between the doctoral student and the participants. Questions are asked and suggestions are made for improving the preparation of doctoral work. Each doctoral student receives a detailed progress report. A report on the candidate's progress is also drawn up by the research supervisor and submitted to the ED director and its general secretariat for archiving. If the assessment at the end of the first year can be improved, this meeting is an opportunity for the doctoral student to become aware of this and to receive all the advice and support needed to improve his or her work for the second year.
In any case, an inadequate assessment of the work carried out during the first year of the thesis does not call into question enrolment in the second year. On the other hand, a poor assessment of progress at the end of the second year of the thesis may result in the ED Board refusing to register the doctoral student for the third year. In this case, the doctoral student is informed that he or she will not be authorized to register for the third year, at the meeting held to review progress at the end of the second year. This decision is then ratified by the ED Board on the basis of the candidate's progress report and a letter from his or her thesis supervisor recommending, on the basis of precise arguments, that the doctoral student not be registered in the third year.
Composition :
Must be present:
- The doctoral student
- Research professors from the doctoral student's research unit
- The doctoral student's research supervisor
-
Step 2: Individual Monitoring Committee (CSI in French)
Modalities:
In accordance with article 13 of the decree of May 25, 2016 (Amended by the decree of August 26, 2022), an individual monitoring committee (CSI) has been assigned to each PhD student enrolled in the first year of their thesis since September 2016. As far as possible, the composition of this CSI should remain constant throughout the PhD. To this end, the ED ensures that the doctoral student is consulted on the composition of his or her CSI before the meeting.
In an annual meeting with the doctoral student, the CSI assesses the conditions of his/her training and the progress of his/her research. The ISC minutes are then sent to the doctoral student, the research supervisor and the ED administrative manager.

In particular, it seeks to prevent any form of conflict, discrimination or harassment, which may be reported to the Paris 1 hotline:

In accordance with article 11 of the decree of May 25, 2016 (modified by the decree of August 26, 2022), the opinion of the doctoral student's individual monitoring committee is taken into account, in addition to that of the ED council and the research director, to authorize the doctoral student to register for the next year.
Under the responsibility of the accredited institutions, the Doctoral School sets out the conditions for monitoring and supervising doctoral students in a charte du doctorat, the terms of which it defines.
Composition :
Must be present:
Start of thesis BEFORE September 2022:
- The doctoral student
- 2 teacher-researchers who may belong to the research unit to which the candidate is assigned, or 2 teacher-researchers belonging to EDMPS.
NB: The doctoral student's research supervisor does not take part in the CSI.
Start of thesis AFTER September 2022 :
- The doctoral student
- The doctoral student's Individual Follow-up Committee includes at least one member who is a specialist in the discipline or related to the field of the thesis. Whenever possible, the doctoral student's Individual Monitoring Committee includes a member from outside the institution. It also includes a non-specialist member from outside the thesis research field.
NB: The doctoral student's supervisor must leave the room at this stage.
-
Step 3: Interview with thesis supervisor
Modalities :
At the end of the CSI, the members present can discuss points for improvement with the thesis director, make a general assessment (of progress and the CSI) and finally discuss the doctoral student's expectations for the continuation of the thesis.Composition :
- Les membres présents durant le CSI du/de la doctorant(e)
- Le directeur de recherche du/de la doctorant(e) concerné(e)
NB: The doctoral student must leave the room at this stage.
The doctoral path
Its aim is to support doctoral students during the preparation of their thesis, by offering them a wide range of activities to help them advance their work and prepare for their future careers.
The doctoral program is defined at the beginning of each year by the doctoral student and his/her research supervisor. It can be updated throughout the year. The doctoral program is monitored annually by the research supervisors and the doctoral school board, without leading to the award of a diploma. At the end of each of the first three years of thesis enrolment, the research director validates with the doctoral student the parts of the program that have been completed. To do this, he or she uses a document provided by the Doctoral School entitled "ECTS credit registration form".
At the end of June, this information is sent to the Doctoral School Board, which validates it before awarding the doctoral student his or her ECTS credits.
Consult the decrees setting the conditions for the national doctoral diploma :
Doctoral Charter
Under the responsibility of the accredited institutions, the Doctoral School sets out the conditions for monitoring and supervising doctoral students in a doctoral charter, the terms of which it defines. In particular, this charter sets out the procedures for recourse to mediation in the event of conflict between the doctoral student and his/her thesis supervisor, and the doctoral student's commitment to responding to any request for information about his/her integration into the company and career path after the doctorate. This charter is approved by the director of the Doctoral School, the director of the host research unit or team, and the thesis director(s). It is signed by the doctoral student and the thesis director when the student first registers.
