Students wishing to embark on a doctorate should look into the question of funding as early as their Master's years.
Some sources of funding cover the 3 years of the thesis: doctoral contracts from higher education establishments or research centers, doctoral grants from the region, research grants from foreign governments, etc. Others cover only a few months of study: ATER positions, Eiffel scholarships, etc.

Doctoral contracts
The doctoral contract is the main source of funding for doctoral students. It is a 3-year fixed-term employment contract (CDD) which allows the doctoral student to be employed by a public institution in order to write his/her thesis.

3) PhD contracts for the disabled
The Ministry of Higher Education (MENESR) and the CNRS offer doctoral contracts reserved for students with disabilities.

Industrial Research Training Agreements
Conventions Industrielles de Formation par la Recherche (CIFRE) (Industrial Research Training Agreements) enable young researchers to carry out their thesis within a company, while carrying out a research and development program in conjunction with a public research team outside the company.
Doctoral grants Ile-de-France region
Each year, the Region awards doctoral grants targeting a given number of themes, either within a major field of interest (DIM), or outside a DIM (Allocations de recherche sur domaines ciblés - ARDoC).

Thesis grants
Thesis grants are offered by research organizations, local authorities, foundations, associations and governments.
Calls for applications are often made very early in the year (as early as January), so it's advisable to take an interest from the start of your M2 year.

Doctoral students at the end of their thesis may be appointed as temporary teaching and research assistants.
Duration: 1 year, renewable 1 time.

In addition to the funding described above, foreign doctoral students can apply for research grants designed to encourage international mobility.

- Eiffel grant for doctoral students
The doctoral component of the Eiffel program provides funding for up to ten months' inward mobility as part of a co-supervision or co-direction of a thesis (preferably in the 2nd year of the doctorate).
- Agence universitaire de la francophonie
Offers scholarships to foreign students from French-speaking countries wishing to do a thesis at a French university.
